Terra Nova Production notes

• First oil was produced on January 20, 2002.
• Terra Nova reached peak production rate of 125,000 barrels per day by January 28.
• The first load of Terra Nova crude was transferred to the tanker Kometik on January 31.
• In August 2002 Petro-Canada applied to the Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board for authorization to increase the annual oil production rate for the Terra Nova field.
• On December 3, 2002 the CNOPB announced its decision to increase the annual oil production rate for Terra Nova from 100,600 barrels per day (36.7 million barrels per year) to 150,000 barrels per day (54.8 million barrels per year). This decision also allows the CNOPB to furthur increase the annual production rate up to a maximum of 200,000 barrels per day (73.0 million barrels per year) after further consideration.
• February 2003 production was impacted by poor weather which resulted in the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel being unable to offload oil on several occasions. Production in February was also down as a result of one of the shuttle tankers being in port for maintenance for a portion of the month, resulting in some oil having to be diverted to the FPSO's storage tanks.
• In August 2003 production was shut down at the facility for 15 days due to routine maintenance, which was followed by mechanical problems preventing gas injection. Production returned to normal levels on October 10, 2003.
• Problems with the gas compression system caused oil production to drop by 38 percent in April 2004. Repairs to this system continued into early May.
• The Terra Nova FPSO vessel was shut down for several days, beginning in August 2004, for scheduled maintenance, repairs to the gas compression system and the replacement of a cracked flare tip. Normal production was not resumed until late October.
• On November 21, 2004 production was shut down for three weeks due to an oil spill from the produced water system.
• In early September 2005 a planned 40-day shutdown of production occurred during which regular maintenance on the FPSO and upgrades to the gas compression system were carried out.
• Production was halted on May 7, 2006 to begin an extended period of planned maintenance, hastened by mechanical problems with the main power generators which caused reduced production since February. The maintenance period began with the hull of the FPSO being scraped of marine growth (to remove and contain oil trapped in the growth from the oil spill of November 2004). In June the FPSO left the Terra Nova site and travelled to Conception Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, for the installation of a turret cover plate. From there, the FPSO sailed to a drydock in Rotterdam for the installation of a new accommodations module, generator repairs, and the application of anti-fouling paint to the hull to prevent future marine growth. The FPSO returned to the Terra Nova field in September 2006.
• In June 2008 production was shut down for 2 weeks for scheduled maintenance on the Terra Nova FPSO.
• In late September 2009 production was shut down for 3 weeks for scheduled maintenance on the Terra Nova FPSO.
• In mid July 2010 production was shut down for 4 weeks for scheduled maintenance on the Terra Nova FPSO.
• Terra Nova production declined in November and December 2010 due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide in some oil wells, which were subsequently shut down.
• In October/November 2011 production was shut down for 4 weeks for scheduled maintenance on the Terra Nova FPSO and to install new seafloor flowlines to handle the hydrogen sulphide encountered in four wells late in 2010.
• In early June 2012 production was shut down for an expected 21 weeks for equipment upgrades on the Terra Nova FPSO.
• In late September 2013 production was shut down for 11 weeks for maintenance on the Terra Nova FPSO.
• In early August 2014 production was shut down for 4 weeks for scheduled maintenance on the Terra Nova FPSO.
• In early May 2015 a gearbox attached to the Terra Nova FPSO main starboard generator failed, as a result production was shut down for a few weeks.
• In late December 2019 production was suspended by order of the C-NLOPB due to safety issues on the Terra Nova FPSO.
• The Terra Nova FPSO was moved offsite in 2020 for an extensive refit and life extension project, it returned to the Terra Nova site in late 2023. Production resumed in November 2023.
